Flat-lay photography
Also called flatlay, laydown or knolling.
Flat-lay photography is product photography in which a garment or a set of items is arranged flat on a surface and photographed from directly overhead, producing a clean, straight-on record of the product with no body or form inside it.
How it is set up
The whole technique is one geometric rule: the camera's sensor is parallel to the surface. Any tilt and the garment's proportions skew — one shoulder longer than the other, a hem that reads as curved — which is the single most common flaw in a self-shot flat-lay.
Beyond that it is a lighting and preparation exercise. Soft, even light from two sides keeps shadows off the fabric, and most of the work is physical: the garment steamed, the seams straightened, the sleeves arranged the same way for every style so a category page lines up.
- Overhead rig — a copy stand, tripod arm or ceiling mount to hold the camera square to the surface
- Even light — two soft sources, or diffused daylight, to avoid a shadow gradient across the frame
- Surface — seamless and non-reflective; white or a low-contrast neutral
- Garment prep — steamed, seams squared, sleeve and collar arrangement standardised across the catalogue
Why sellers start here
It is the cheapest honest image of a product. No model, no form, no studio booking — a table, a window and a phone will produce a usable flat-lay, which is why it is almost always the first product photography a small seller does and why resale and one-off inventory live on it.
It is also the most accurate record of the flat facts. Colour, print placement, trim and construction are all clearly legible because nothing is curving away from the camera. That accuracy is why a flat-lay is the best input to other techniques even when it is not the image you publish.
Flat-lay as an input, not just an output
In a modern workflow the flat-lay increasingly does double duty. It is the frame that generative try-on and ghost-mannequin tools read the garment from, which changes what makes a good flat-lay: not the most styled arrangement, but the most legible one.
For that job, square and boring beats artful. A garment laid out symmetrically on plain white, filling the frame, with no props overlapping it, gives a renderer an unambiguous read of the silhouette, the print scale and the trim.
- Shoot square and symmetrical — a styled diagonal arrangement is harder to read
- Keep props off the garment; anything overlapping it becomes ambiguous
- Plain, high-contrast background so the garment edge is unambiguous
- Shoot larger than you need — detail can be discarded, not invented
The one thing it cannot show
A flat-lay has no worn shape. It shows the garment as a two-dimensional object, so it cannot answer how the shoulders sit, where the waist falls, or how the fabric hangs — which for most apparel is exactly the question a buyer needs answered before paying.
It is also weak on scale and on anything structural. A flat-lay of a coat does not convey its weight or its volume, and knitwear laid flat loses the loft that is half of what the buyer is paying for.
- No fit or drape information at all
- Structured garments — tailoring, outerwear — lose the volume that justifies their price
- Poor at scale, so accessories and jewellery need a body or a reference object instead
- Perspective error is unforgiving: a few degrees of camera tilt visibly distorts proportion
Common questions
What is the difference between a flat-lay and a ghost mannequin shot?
A flat-lay is genuinely flat — the garment lies on a surface. A ghost mannequin shot shows the garment holding its three-dimensional worn shape with nothing inside it. Flat-lay is much cheaper; ghost mannequin answers the shape question.
What is knolling?
Knolling is a stricter style of flat-lay in which every item is arranged at right angles and evenly spaced, usually for a set of components or an outfit laid out together. It is a composition convention rather than a different technique.
Is a phone good enough for flat-lay photography?
For the flat facts, generally yes — modern phone cameras resolve colour and detail well at this working distance. The two things that will hold you back are keeping the camera exactly square to the surface and getting even light, neither of which the camera solves for you.
Can a flat-lay be turned into an on-model image?
Yes — that is the standard input for generative try-on, which infers the worn shape from the flat garment. A square, well-lit, unobstructed flat-lay produces a noticeably better render than a styled one.
